Ancient Greek Mythology and Legends

 

The myths of Mount Olympus bring the colorful, whimsical, and sometimes temperamental gods and goddesses to life. Their stories transport us back to a period in time where the earth was ruled by immortals who were filled with lust, jealousy, passion, beauty, and power.Some of these gods engaged in such great feats, or were participants in such intriguing stories, that their myths continue to reign even today. Indeed, their stories, names, and lore continue to be prevalent in modern society, whether in our analogies or words. Whether you want to open Pandora’s box, or feel the weakness of the Achilles’ tendon, read on to immerse yourself in mythical lore.

Achilles – This son of Thetis, the immortal sea nymph and her mortal companion Peleus, Achilles was a hero of the Trojan War and the subject of Homer’s epic Iliad.

The Amazons – These fierce female warriors originated in what is now modern-day Turkey but played a significant role in the myths and battles of ancient Greece.

Pandora – The beautiful maiden given as a gift to the mortal men of earth by Zeus as retribution for Prometheus’ theft of the fire from heaven. With the beautiful maiden came all the evils known to mankind, which she unwittingly unleashed upon the earth.

Persephone – This goddess of the harvest was kidnapped from her home by Hades and taken to the underworld as his bride. Even though she was rescued by Zeus, she was tricked into eating pomegranate seeds that would forever bind her to Hades. Her story is one of the most heartbreaking of the Greek myths.

The Titans – These ancestors of the gods were rulers of the earth before Zeus overthrew his father to become the king of Mount Olympus.

The Myth of Creation - The Greeks, like all civilizations, had their own vision on how the world and their existense came to be.

The Creation of Man by Prometheus - The creation of man as according to Prometheus, as well as a bit of information about his fate.
